DESIGN WITH
THE 90%

Studio Matthews / 2018

Design with the 90% is an exhibition organized by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and hosted at the Gates Foundation Discovery Center. The exhibit includes twenty-six projects from around the world that aim to improve life in some of the world’s most marginalized communities through design innovation.

The exhibition was designed to reflect the myriad of content it embodies; honest, accessible, and uncomplicated. To that end, the design palette is comprised entirely of sustainable, recyclable materials—industrial cardboard Sonotubes, heavy-duty kraft panels, and Tyvek that will be converted into tote bags at the conclusion of the exhibition and donated to local charities.

Joining the Studio Matthews team to execute design and production coordination for the exhibit graphics, my role touched all points of the exhibition delivery. Considering the very eclectic mix of artifact formats, I approached the graphic design with restraint and careful balance to promote each project individually but unify them through material palette and limited color.
