Making its world premiere at EMP Museum, Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume brought one of the most influential entertainment franchises in history to Seattle. Developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, and Lucasfilm, the exhibition explored the artistry and storytelling behind the Star Wars universe through original costumes, concept materials, and behind-the-scenes insights into the creative process.
As lead designer for the exhibition marketing campaign, I developed the creative program that brought the exhibition to life across advertising, events, and visitor-facing experiences, translating a vast library of licensed assets into a cohesive campaign tailored to EMP Museum’s audiences and marketing initiatives. While the exhibition identity and source materials were provided by Lucasfilm and SITES, the creative direction, campaign compositions, supplemental illustrations, and promotional applications were developed specifically for the museum’s extensive range of touchpoints.
A defining challenge was balancing original creative expression with the requirements of one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment franchises. Working across multiple stakeholder groups, approval processes, and intellectual property guidelines, I created a flexible visual system that extended the exhibition’s reach while maintaining both franchise authenticity and a distinctly museum-driven experience, supporting multiple phases of marketing, public engagement, and event programming, including a high-profile opening celebration that transformed the museum into an immersive Star Wars experience.
